Mary Catherine Rieger Hoehn

Mary Catherine Rieger Hoehn, 105, died Oct. 13 at the Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople.

Born Jan. 19, 1911, in Clearfield Township, she was a daughter of Albert and Zilla Glenn Rieger. On Jan. 28, 1935, she married Albert C. Hoehn of Butler at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in a double wedding with her sister. Mr. Hoehn died March 10, 1970.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mark's and an associate member of the Seaman Memorial Church of Zelienople.

A 1919 graduate of Slippery Rock State Teacher's College, she later received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Slippery Rock University. Mary taught for 40 years in the Butler School District.

As a young woman, Mary was an officer in the Luther League and was a member of the Young Women in Business Club. During World War II, she was director of an after-school program at the YWCA.

At St. Mark's in Butler she taught Sunday school for 45 years, served on the executive committee of the Sunday School Association and Women of the Church. Mary also represented the church at several district meetings of the American Lutheran Church.

For many years, Mary represented St. Mark's at the Fellowship of Butler County Churches, where she served as first vice-president and chairwoman of the Community Service Committee, secretary of the Religious Education Committee, on the Spiritual Life Committee and co-chair of the Butler County Teachers Training Course.

Mary was a life member of the Alumni Association of Slippery Rock University, the Eastern Star Chapter 421 of Butler, and a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association, the Butler County Retired Teachers Association, the Woman's Club of Butler and the AARP. She was formerly a member of the Butler Business and Professional Women's Club and Thiel College Women's Club.

As a resident of Newhaven Court in Zelienople, Mary served on the executive board of the Residence Association, the welcoming committee and the buddy committee, and was coordinator of religious services, among others.

In 2001, Mary was inducted into the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame.

Survivors include her son, the Rev. Dr. Richard A. Hoehn and his wife, Carole Zimmerman, of Adelphi, Md.; her daughter, Ruth Marie Hoehn Stoyer, and her husband, the Rev. Kenneth A. Stoyer, of Groveland, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Alberta Rieger Hutton of St. John's Care Center at Mars; and her brother, Floyd Albert Rieger.
