CLAY TWP — An uncontained trash fire spread and scorched about two acres of woodland Friday at 345 Byers Road, according to West Sunbury Fire Chief Reid Campbell.

A woman was burning a pile of trash next to her house around 12:30 p.m. She left the pile unattended.

The fire spread to the woods next to the house, as well as to piles of rough-cut lumber that were under protective covers, and a storage shed owned by residents of the house.

Volunteer firefighters from the Unionville and West Sunbury departments responded and spent a half-hour putting out the ground fire.

“The flames of the wildland fire were moving toward another house, so we had to contain the wildland fire first, and then we attacked the other stuff,” Campbell said.

It took more than two hours to extinguish everything. The value of the rough-cut lumber has not yet been determined. Campbell said he is not sure if the contents of the storage shed had value.

There also are remnants of fiberglass in the rubble, and he knows that the residents of the house have done fiberglass boat work in the past, but is not sure if a boat was destroyed or if the fiberglass was just “junk.”

Campbell said the fire took 15 firefighters to put out. No one was hurt. A few firefighters were treated on scene by Butler Ambulance personnel for heat and smoke and were released back into service.

The volunteer departments from North Washington and Prospect also were on scene for water supply.
