This is a sad time of the year for the old Scoopster.

The high school football season is in its twilight. Only two teams remain. Only two picks to be made and I’m far short of 100 wins.

Soon, I’ll have to retreat to my nest until next fall.

But there are still two teams left — Seneca Valley and Karns City — and they have tough challenges ahead of them this week.

On to the picks:

Central Catholic 46, Seneca Valley 21 — This is the Raiders’ first trip to the WPIAL title game since 1989 and a whole lot of things have changed since that trip 27 years ago.

First of all, Seneca Valley played Aliquippa (yes, the Quips) in that game at Three Rivers Stadium. Heinz Field wasn’t even a dream yet.

It was the Class AAA final — the Raiders’ last year in that class before moving up to Quad-A.

This year, the game is at Heinz Field and it’s a 6A game because of the expanded classes in the PIAA and the WPIAL this season.

Different times.

Seneca Valley will play a familiar foe in Central Catholic, a juggernaut if there ever was one with a team loaded with Division I talent and a penchant for blowing good teams out of the water, as it did the first time the Vikings played the Raiders.

The game ended up 42-14.

Seneca Valley does have its own stars in Jack Cook, Payton Skalos and Hank Royal.

Cook is closing in on 2,000 yards passing and also has more than 600 yards rushing. Royal is a dual threat with 1,200 yards rushing and a slew of receptions and Skalos is the security blanket in the passing game.

I think this game will be closer Friday night than the previous meeting, but Central Catholic just has too much.

Hickory 30, Karns City 24 — Karns City is hoping to avoid getting hit by a Carr.

Chuck Carr.

Carr has raced for 2,182 yards and scored 41 touchdowns this season for undefeated Hickory.

The Gremlins figure to see a large dose of Carr this week.

But Karns City is a feisty bunch and it has a stable of weapons as well.

Chandler Turner. Cullen Williams. Kaiden Powers. Jacob King. Eric Dodd. Jimmy Thompson.

The list goes on.

I had a tough time with this pick. Part of me has a feeling that Karns City can win this and move on. Another part of me thinks the same of Hickory, which is coming in with a tremendous amount of momentum.

As much as it pains me, I have to go against Karns City and pick Hickory.

I hope I’m wrong.

If I am, that means I get another week.

Scoop was 3-1 last week and is 87-30 this season.
