Scoop's still on learning curve
Well, I wasn't 11-0.
I guess I'll have to take 9-2.
If I have learned anything in this crazy high school football season, it is that I haven't learned anything.
The things I thought I knew, I actually don't know.
I'm vexed. I'm terribly vexed.
Anyway, the good thing is I have another week to try again. There are 11 more games on the slate, so ...
On to the picks:
Canon-McMillan 27, Butler 22 — I have to hand it to the Golden Tornado. They are a scrappy bunch.
They'll scrap again ... but fall just short.
Seneca Valley 43, Altoona 13 — The Raiders get a chance to plunder another team before the playoffs.
Mars 26, Knoch 9 — This is another game that is tough to pick.
On paper, Mars is the superior team.
But football games aren't played on paper. The Planets, though, get to play on turf — they haven't had much luck on the grass at Knoch.
That's why I'm picking Mars.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 24, Freedom 18 — The Trojans need a win to get into the WPIAL playoffs.
They'll get it.
Freeport 20, Valley 17 — The Yellowjackets desperately need a win. It won't get them into the playoffs, but it will cap a season that in many ways exceeded expectations.
They'll do their part.
Karns City 23, Clearfield 22 — This could be the game of the week.
It's a good playoff tune-up for the Gremlins and I think they'll find a way to get a win.
Redbank Valley 27, Moniteau 13 — The Warriors have young players at key positions and they have had to grow up in a hurry this season.
While I wouldn't be surprised if Moniteau pulled off an upset, I have to go with Redbank Valley.
Ridgway 40, Union/A-C Valley 15 — The Knight Falcons are reeling.
Lucas Bowser and Gavin Hawk have formed quite the combination in the passing game, but it hasn't been enough for Union/A-C Valley this season.
Grove City 36, Central Tech 13 — Ah, our first playoff game prediction of the season.
District 10 is firing up its postseason in Week 10 — or is it Week 9, I can't keep it straight.
Regardless, the Eagles are coming off a lopsided loss to Meadville and are eager to get back their mojo.
Mojo recaptured.
Mercyhurst Prep 34, Slippery Rock 20 — Another playoff game, the Rockets are a little out-gunned in this one. But they are scrappy. They'll make this a game.
Summit Academy 46, Avella 23 — The Knights will cap their season with a win.
Scoop is 71-25 this season.
