Thomas V. Giel

Thomas V. Giel of Gibsonia passed away Friday.

Born May 1, 1924, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Robert T. and Loretta M. Claus Giel. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Peggy Zang Giel.

He is survived by his sons, Robert L. of Massachusetts, Thomas V. Jr. (Vickie) of Tennessee, Jeffrey D. of Vermont, Edward B. (Jackie) of Gibsonia, Scott A. of Valencia and Gerald L. (Janice) of Butler; and his three daughters, Penny (Patrick) Bopp of Fredericksburg, Va., Cynthia (Milton) Knouse of Gettysburg, and Mary Ellen (Paul) Foster of Laytonsville, Md. He also is survived by 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was the brother of James Giel, Jane Kovach, Patricia Brennan and the late Paul, William, Robert, Charles, Walter, Richard, Mercedes, Helen, Kathryn and Ruth. Special thanks to Diane Linn (Giel), Tom's longtime caregiver.

Tom Giel was a giant in the garage door industry and was the founder and co-owner of the Thomas V. Giel Garage Doors. He was also a member of St. Richard Church, the American Legion in Evans City, the Mars VFW, a past president of the North Hills Squares, the PA State Square Dancers Federation, a past president of the Western PA Square & Round Dance Federation and the Men's Bowling League in Mars.

GIEL — The family of Thomas V. Giel, who died Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Schellhaas & Sons Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1600 Stone Mansion Drive, Franklin Park.
