BUTLER TWP — Butler Township’s three volunteer fire companies will likely get about the same amount of state money as last year, township manager Ed Kirkwood said this morning.

Commissioners voted Monday night to split the municipality’s annual fire relief allocation evenly between the departments, but Kirkwood said today that decision was based on incorrect information and the board would likely reverse course and do what it did last year, split the money three ways, with 50 percent going to Fire District Station 3 and 25 percent each going to Mercer Road VFD and South Butler VFD.

Kirkwood said the township had received $115,984 from the state for this year. The money is allocated annually to nearly 2,000 volunteer firefighter relief associations throughout the state. Last year the township received about $113,000, Kirkwood said.

The associations are affiliated with volunteer fire companies but legally separate from them. The state money awarded each year can be used for a variety of purposes, including purchasing insurance for firefighters, training expenses and safety equipment. The township website says about 190 people volunteer with the departments.
