History made at BCC?

3 holes-in-one highlight women's Four-Ball tourney

PENN TWP — History may have been made Thursday at Butler Country Club.

Kathy Danch and Renee Knight, both of Erie, scored holes-in-one on the No. 10, 98-yard hole moments apart during the Pennsylvania State Women’s Golf Association Western Division Four-Ball Tournament.

“That might be the quickest two holes-in-one on the same hole ever in a women’s golf event,” BCC PGA pro Vikki Vanderpool said. “We’re researching that through ESPN.”

The No. 10 hole was only Danch’s third hole of the day. She used a 9-iron and her ball landed well past the hole, then rolled down the slope and into the cup.

“That was awesome,” the 61-year-old Danch said. “I thought I hit it too good. But it rolled back toward the pin.”

The No. 10 served as a closest-to-the-pin hole for the two-woman best ball tournament. Knight, 56, hit her tee shot just one foursome after Danch’s completed the hole.

“I used an 8-iron, a bit more club. because it was windy,” Knight said. “My shot went the exact same way, past the hole and rolled back in.

“At the time, I didn’t even realize Kathy had made her hole-in-one. I put my name on the (closest to pin) card and didn’t notice her hole-in-one was written right above it.

“That was truly amazing. I had never seen anything like that,” Knight added.

The amazement wasn’t over yet. On the No. 15, 130-yard par 3 hole, Paula Bauer, 66, teed off with a 7-iron and scored a hole-in-one.

“And nobody saw it,” Bauer said, laughing. “I didn’t actually see the ball go in myself. I approached the green with some wedges, walked by the cup and saw the ball in there.

“That was a thrill ... an absolute thrill.”

Bauer and Kathy Danch were playing partners for the day, paired together by happenstance.

“We never met each other before today. I guess we brought each other luck,” Danch said.

Bauer came from Dillsburg — near Harrisburg — to play in the tournament.

Bauer has been playing golf for 45 years. Danch has been playing for 30 years, Wright for 20. None had ever shot a hole-in-one before.

There were 38 duos competing in the event. Winning the championship for lowest gross score were Katy Miller of Jeannette (Ligonier CC) and Katrin Wolfe of Johnstown (Windber) with a 4-under-par 68.

Winning the net championship with a 65 were Danielle Proctor and Kat Katawczik of Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

Five Butler Country Club golfers — Sue Colton, Jane Wymer, Cheryll Cranmer, Melinda Meighen and Suzie Boros — were among the field. Wymer and Cranmer shot a gross 76 and net 70.

“We hit the ball well, but I know that score’s not going to be good enough,” Wymer said. The two were among the first to turn in their scores.

“I missed an eagle putt on 7 and settled for a birdie, but that was fun,” she added.

Cranmer said the course was in “incredible shape.”

“Beautiful day ... We enjoyed this,” she said. “It was a perfect day to play and there were some excellent golfers out here.”

Carol Semple Thompson, a World Golf Hall of Famer and multiple winner of national and international amateur golf events, was among them. She teamed with Wanda McGarry for a 1-under-par net score of 71.

“I haven’t played here in a long time, but it’s a beautiful golf course. I just didn’t play it very well today,” Thompson said.

“Hail the queen — and she is the queen of golf as far as I’m concerned,” Wymer said. “I have incredible respect for that lady ... such a down to earth, humble person.”
