SEVEN FIELDS — The Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police Department hired two new part-time officers Monday night, filling a vacancy left when an officer died earlier this year.

The police commission approve the hiring of officers Jeff Lewis and Jason Gilotty.

Lewis started his field training Aug. 22 and will complete his required hours of training by mid-October, police administrator Tom Smith said.

Lewis said he grew up in Cranberry Township and graduated from Seneca Valley High School. He holds a degree from California University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy. He also works as an officer for Ohio Township, Allegheny County.

Gilotty will start his training soon, and should be ready by late October.

He is a graduate of Edinboro University, who is originally from Moon Township, Allegheny County. He earned his degree in education and worked as a teacher for one year before changing careers, he said.

With the hire, the department now has three full-time and 10 part-time officers, said Chief Joe McCombs.

The hirings come after the death of officer Kristine Bartman in July. Bartman was killed when she crashed her black Yamaha Bolt motorcycle on the Liberty Bridge in Pittsburgh while returning home from a concert.

Though she was hired as a part-time officer, Bartman had been working nearly 40 hours per week, McCombs said.
