Death of teenager ruled homicidePITTSBURGH — A medical examiner has ruled the death a teenage girl shot on a Pittsburgh street a homicide.The Allegheny County coroner’s office said Sunday that 17-year-old Daija McCall died of a perforating gunshot wound to the chest.Public safety officials said officers responding to a gunshot detector notification shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday found McCall lying near a Homewood intersection. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.Authorities said at least 11 shots were fired. No arrests were immediately announced.Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said officials are deeply saddened by the death of the Carrick High School sophomore. She said McCall “will be missed by all who knew her” and additional support will be provided Monday for students and staff struggling with her death.

Woman faces fraud sentencingPITTSBURGH — A woman who formerly headed a suburban Pittsburgh hospice faces sentencing on a health care fraud charge accusing her of using patients who weren’t terminally ill to collect millions of dollars in false Medicare and Medicaid claims.Former Horizons Hospice chief operating officer Mary Ann Stewart pleaded guilty in June. She’s appearing today before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.Stewart faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000 or both.Prosecutors say the scheme cost the government millions of dollars from January 2008 through August 2012 at the facility in Monroeville.
