King III on target in SRU's 59-23 win
LOCK HAVEN — A coming out party worthy of a King.
As in Don King III.
The Slippery Rock University quarterback completed 33 of 49 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as No. 11 SRU posted a runaway 59-23 college football victory Saturday at Lock Haven.
The score was 45-0 after three quarters and King did not play in the fourth period. He completed only 44 percent of his passes in the first two games.
“We got everything out of this game we were looking for, especially from Don,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz said. “Our passing game broke through today.
“Shamar (Greene) only had 53 yards and Lock Haven was keying on him. We needed Don to deliver and he did.”
King and freshman backup Nathaniel Musselman completed passes to 11 different receivers. Cornelius Raye had 11 catches for 174 yards, including touchdown grabs of 43 and 6 yards. King connected on a 6-yard scoring toss to Drew Scales as well.
“Millie Raye had an outstanding game,” Lutz said.
The Rock (3-0) generated 648 yards offensively. SRU missed a pair of field goal attempts in the first half, though Jake Chapla did connect on a three-pointer from 44 yards out.
Lock Haven (0-3) managed only 308 yards of offense, including four net rushing yards.
“Jake is a freshman and the consistency is going to come,” Lutz said of his place-kicker. “That 44-yarder would have been goods from 54. We know he has the leg.
“We didn't do well in the red zone in the first half. Honestly, if we converted like we should have, we could have had 50 points by halftime.”
The Rock forced no turnovers and Kyle Hall led the team with five tackles. But SRU played a lot of people and Lock Haven quarterback Caleb Walton was getting rid of the ball quickly.
“Two or three-step drops and the ball was out,” Lutz said. “I know they were concerned about our defensive front. We limited one of the best passing attacks in the country and that was good to see.”
Shawn Seif paced the Bald Eagles with 11 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown.
SRU has not lost to Lock Haven since 1980. The Rock is 32-0-1 against the Bald Eagles since.
SRU returns home Saturday to host Gannon at 6 p.m. The game marks the PSAC West opener and is Hall of Fame Night.
