VANDERGRIFT — State police say it will take weeks to mechanically examine a specially equipped car driven by a man who was shot at by a Pennsylvania police officer who was hit by the vehicle.

No charges have been filed against the 67-year-old driver who has told investigators the car malfunctioned and its accelerator stuck while he was driving Wednesday morning in Vandergrift.

That’s where Officer Joseph Gray fired at the vehicle — piercing the windshield but not wounding the driver — believing the car had purposely targeted him. A garbage truck worker nearby also was hit by the vehicle.

Vandergrift police say Gray is on paid leave while state police and the Westmoreland County district attorney investigate. That’s routine in officer-involved shootings.

The officer and garbage worker are recovering.
