Teen dies in SUV roll over wreck on I-80
WOLF CREEK TWP. Mercer County — A Montgomery County teenager was killed Monday afternoon when his sport utility vehicle crashed and rolled over several times on Interstate 80 near the Mercer-Butler county line, authorities said.
Scott Loper, Jr., 19, of Lansdale was pronounced dead at the scene after the wreck that happened about 3:45 p.m. a little east of Interstate 79 and north of Grove City in Wolf Creek Township.
State police said Loper was traveling east on I-80 when his 1997 Jeep Wrangler veered off the north side of the highway and into the grass median.
When he tried to steer the SUV back onto the eastbound lanes, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over “multiple times,” a police report said.
The Jeep ended up on its driver’s side in the median. The teen, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle.
A firefighter/paramedic from Detroit who arrived at the wreck, stopped to help and pulled Loper out of the Jeep, said Chief Levi Hipps of the Pine Township Engine Company.
However, Lope was dead of apparent injuries in the accident.
The crash initially closed both lanes in each direction, Hipps said. Later, all but one eastbound lane was reopened.
All lanes were reopened about 5:45 p.m.
