Lucy L. Dollar
Lucy L. Dollar of Surrey Lane, Butler, a retired well-known, beloved and respected Karns City High School English teacher, came face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ early Monday morning at Butler Memorial Hospital while surrounded by her loving family.
Born Nov. 8 in Chicora, Lucy was the daughter of the late John Hetrick and Josephine Kelly Hetrick Moore; and the granddaughter of James C. “Pop” and Alice Jackson “Kelly” Kelly.
Lucy graduated from Chicora High School with highest honors. She was a member of the first graduating class of Butler County Community College, graduating with high honors. She completed her education at Slippery Rock State College and graduated with high honors, earning a bachelor's degree in Secondary English, all while being a loving and dedicated mother to her two young sons. Lucy taught English at Butler High School for one year and then spent the rest of her career from 1972 until retirement in 1998 at Karns City High School. She loved teaching and was highly regarded by many of her students as “my favorite teacher.” She always enjoyed meeting and reminiscing with former students.
Lucy found her Christian faith while watching a Billy Graham telecast in 1977 and was a committed follower of Christ. Lucy and her husband, John, had most recently attended the Butler Church of the Nazarene. Over the years Lucy and John have sponsored numerous overseas children through AMG International (Advancing the Ministries of the Gospel) and World Vision.
Lucy loved flower gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and walking and hiking the trails at Moraine State Park. She looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed the annual Goosetown picnic as well as high school reunions. She led book club reviews at New Haven Court and volunteered at the Butler Library's Door Step Program and the Adult Literacy Program, helping individuals obtain a G.E.D. Lucy participated in the A.C.T.S. Choir in Butler (Adoring Christ Through Song) with Easter, patriotic, Thanksgiving and Christmas concerts. Lucy and John enjoyed good food and conversation and meeting friends and family at Panera Bread and Natili's North. She most especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, John Dollar of Butler. Also surviving are two sons, William J. “Bill” Hile Jr. of East Brady and Christopher M. “Chris” Hile and his wife, Terri, of St. Petersburg; two grandsons, whom Lucy adored, Trevor M. Hile and his wife, Sarah, of Emlenton and Aaron W. Hile of St. Petersburg and his girlfriend, Danielle, of Emlenton; a great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn Elaine Hile, of whom Lucy affectionately referred to as “Gweni;” two sisters, Joanne McGowan of Portersville and Kay Riley of Chicora; two brothers, Charles D. Hetrick and his wife, Alice, of Chicora and Terry Moore and his wife, Kathy, of Sebastian, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, who were all very special to Lucy; a number of cousins; and a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to her parents, Lucy was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, John “Jack” and Aileene Hetrick; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, George and Pearl Dollar; her stepfather, LeRoy Moore, a niece, a nephew, and three brothers-in-law.
DOLLAR — Friends of Lucy L. Dollar, who died Monday, June 27, 2016, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Road, Chicora,A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Leon Blaise, pastor of the Butler Church of the Nazarene and Lucy's nephew, and the Rev. Robert G. Hile Jr., pastor of Family Life Church of God of Prophecy, officiating.
