ZELIENOPLE — The borough community park has a new fundraising campaign to help pay for its new community swimming pool.

The One Brick at a Time campaign is an investment in the park and the new pool. Anyone can buy an engraved brick for the walkway to the new pool.

“We’re doing this as a way to reach out to individuals,” park office manager Jen Semel said.

Bricks can commemorate special occasions, an honor or a loved one or exemplify a friendship or accomplishment. Clubs, organizations and businesses also can buy a brick to honor their members.

Each brick paver is laser-engraved for durability and has a lifetime warranty. Two sizes of bricks are available, 4 x 8 inches and 8 x 8 inches.

Donation forms can be downloaded on the borough’s website and on the community park’s website at www.myzeliepark.org.

“If by chance we exceed what we need, we would incorporate that into green space,” Semel said of the number of bricks. “We feel like we could take as many as people are interested in buying.”

The new pool with updated bathhouse and green space areas is expected to cost $2.1 million to $2.3 million.

Parks director Alecia Flood said the main fundraising goal for the pool project is selling the naming rights.

“We have about $300,000 up for grabs for someone that would like to name the pool,” parks director Alecia Flood said.

Potential features for the new pool include zero-grade entry to help those with physical challenges and toddlers and swimming lanes for competition. A filtration building, equipment and utilities, bathhouse improvements and landscaping will be included.

A storm drainage system will be installed to prevent water from the adjacent creek from overflowing at the pool in heavy rains.

Slides, a diving board, shelters and sidewalks also are being looked at.

Semel and parks board member Carol Schneider said groundbreaking could happen next fall at the latest.

“We believe we’re at 75 percent or so of what we need (financially),” Semel said.

The project earlier this year received a $700,000 state grant and a $100,000 donation from Tom Murray, a borough resident and a former pool lifeguard.

The park also is doing other fundraising for the pool. These include selling churros and soft pretzels at this weekend’s Horse Trading Days, a mud run this fall and Zelie on Tap on Oct. 8.

Flood said the park plans to bring Scott Blasey, Rob James and Greg Joseph of the Clarks to the park’s amphitheater Aug. 19 for an acoustic concert.

The pool project needs approval from the State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources before starting.

“In the meantime, we’re going to fundraise to make this dream a reality,” Semel said.
