Kenneth Popowitz

Kenneth L. Popowitz, 90, of Butler, formerly of New Kensington, passed away Thursday at the Veterans Community Living Center in Butler.

Born July 4, 1925, in Arnold, Pa., he was the son of the late Andrew Popowitz and Mary (Grayson) Popowitz. Ken proudly served his country in the United States Army in World War II and was a former prisoner of war.

Ken lived in Arnold/New Kensington all his life before he and his wife moved to Butler eight years ago. He was a member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in New Kensington. Ken retired from the New Kensington Post Office, where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of the New Kensington Elks, where he served as an Exalted Ruler. Besides being with his family, Ken enjoyed golfing, bowling and wintering in Florida for 17 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joan, who passed away on Aug. 31, 2015, and his only sibling, John Popowitz, who died while serving his country in World War II. Ken has one daughter, Candice Ward, and her husband, John, of Renfrew; two grandchildren, Megan (Ward) Celentano and Tamara (Ward) Panzino; four great-grandsons, A.J. and Nicholas Celentano and Dominic and Nash Panzino, along with several nieces and nephews.

POPOWITZ — The family of Kenneth L. Popowitz, who died Thursday, June 2, 2016, will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Boylan Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Connoquenessing Township, 856 Evans City Road, Renfrew. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Roman Catholic Fidelis Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Butler, with Rev. James F. Murphy, officiating. Military honors will be held at the funeral home following Mass. Private entombment will take place at the Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell.Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.boylanfuneralservices.com.
