Butler County Historical Society at the Senator Walter Lowrie House Museum, 123 W. Diamond St., is closed while new exhibits are prepared.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, 401 Meadowcroft Road in Avella, Washington County, will host its Independence Day Celebration on Saturday and Sunday. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $14 for adults, $13 for senior citizens and $6 for children ages 6 to 17. PITTSBURGH

National Aviary, 700 Arch St., presents the interactive, walk-through Butterfly Garden featuring a variety of native butterfly species in the outdoor Rose Garden daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through mid-September, weather permitting. ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Cartoon Art at 945 Liberty Ave., hosts a free program exploring the relationship between U.S. veterans and comic book hero Captain America in “Super Soldiers: Captain America and the U.S. Military” at 7 p.m. Friday. The display “Captain America: 75 Years of the Sentinel of Liberty” continues through Aug. 14. All U.S. military personnel and veterans receive free admission. Work by the nation’s leading editorial cartoonists is on display through Aug. 28. Museum hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays; closed Tuesdays and major holidays. Children’s Museum, 10 Children’s Way, Allegheny Square, presents “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit” through Jan. 17. The Children’s Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Carnegie Museum of Natural History, 4400 Forbes Ave. in Oakland, hosts the traveling exhibition “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic,” which showcases some of the magazine’s most compelling photographs, from Steve McCurry’s Afghan girl to Michael Nichols’ iconic image of Jane Goodall, through Sept. 11. The Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art, 4400 Forbes Ave., are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturdays with extended hours until 8 p.m. Thursdays, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Carnegie Science Center next to Heinz Field on the North Side, hosts behind-the-scenes “Tech Tours” of the USS Requin, the real Cold War-era submarine moored at the Science Center along the Ohio River, on July 10, 24; Aug. 7, 21; and Sept. 11.
