McKee, Anderson among PSAC Top 10LOCK HAVEN — Butler graduate Colin McKee and Slippery Rock University junior Sabrina Anderson are among the PSAC Spring Top 10 honorees.The PSAC’s Top 10 awards are designed to recognize student-athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom.McKee, a senior pitcher at Mercyhurst, carried a 3.70 grade point average as a biology major. He was named PSAC West Pitcher of the Year with a 1.82 earned run average in 15 starts.Anderson, a junior track and field athlete, carried a 3.901 GPA in exercise science. She was the PSAC champion in the heptathlon.
GCC water polo athletes honoredGROVE CITY — Five Grove City College women’s water polo players have earned all-academic honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.Juniors Abby Jank and Grace Klimek, freshmen Sonni Kiefer and Heidi Schmidt, and recent graduate Ashley Parks are the GCC honorees. Jank and Kiefer have grade point averages above 3.71, Parks and Schmidt are above 3.41 and Klimek is above 3.20.
Mike Marron 16th at West Penn AmateurBEDFORD — Parker resident Mike Marron used a strong third and final round of two-under-par 70 to place 16th out of 47 golfers at Tuesday’s Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championship, held at Bedford Springs’ Old Course.Marron finished with 218 total strokes, 13 behind champion Dan Thompson of Johnstown.Slippery Rock’s Brett Rinker fired a 78 to finish tied for 20th with a final score of 220.
Djokovic, Murray seeded 1st, 2nd at WimbledonLONDON — Novak Djokovic cannot face Andy Murray until the final at Wimbledon after they were seeded first and second, respectively, today for the third tennis Grand Slam of the year.It means Djokovic and Murray will be in separate halves of the draw when it is made on Friday.Richard Gasquet, the 10th-ranked player of France and a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist, is No. 7 and 13th-ranked Marin Cilic, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon the past two years, is No. 9.The women’s seedings follow the WTA rankings, with six-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams at No. 1 and Garbine Muguruza at No. 2, followed by Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep.Play starts Monday.
Jaguar used in Olympic ceremony shot in BrazilSAO PAULO — A jaguar used in an Olympic torch relay ceremony was shot to death after it escaped its leash and tried to attack a soldier, the Brazilian army said Tuesday.The army press office said that Juma the jaguar was on display as part of ceremonies Monday at the Jungle Warfare Instruction Center in Manaus.The Olympic torch is traveling throughout Brazil leading up to the Aug. 5 opening ceremony.When the jaguar tried to attack a soldier sent to help recapture it, handlers shot the animal with tranquilizers. That failed to stop it, so the animal was shot with a pistol in the head.
