John J. Gerulis

John J. Gerulis, 94, of Renfrew passed away Monday at Community Living Center in Butler.

Born Dec. 6, 1921, in Jacob's Creek, Pa., he was a son of the late George and Josephine (Rinkaus) Gerulaitis.

He did painting and wallpapering work for Lou Hortert for many years.

He was a member of Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church in Glade Mills.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and especially his cats.

He was a combat engineer for the U.S. Army. He participated in landing at Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-Day. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit suffered high casualty levels and was awarded a citation from the French government. He was reported missing in action until the end of the war.

Surviving are three children, Mimi LeFever of Butler, John (Dianne) Gerulis of Florida and Janet (Tom) Bandura of Butler; four granddaughters, Kim Anthony, Robin Hile, Megan Grenek and Melissa McGraw; three grandsons, Jason Esper, Jonathan Gerulis and Jesse Gerulis; two stepgranddaughters, Layla and Kelly Bandura; one stepgrandson, Christopher Anthony; great-grandchildren Justin, Lars, Kendra, Brenna, Marley, Trey and Reed; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa (Lehrman) Gerulis, who died Dec. 20, 2015; one brother; and three sisters.

GERULIS — Friends of John J. Gerulis, who died Monday, May 16, 2016, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church, 1304 E. Cruikshank Road, Butler.
