JACKSON TWP — The rate of students in the Seneca Valley School District who return positive results on drug tests is below the national average.

For the 2015-16 school year, the district had a positive result rate of just 0.32 percent, according to data released by the district.

The information was presented Monday at the school board meeting.

There were 14 positive tests out of the 4,318 administered. The national average according to the service the district uses, Sports Safe Testing Service, is 2.2 percent.

In follow-up tests for students who had failed a test previously, there was only one positive result out of 89, a rate of 1.1 percent. The national average on follow-up tests is about 20 percent.

Matt Franz, owner of Sports Safe, said in a news release, “I am always impressed with how Seneca Valley not only deters drug and alcohol abuse, but how they intervene when an issue is discovered. This is a great measure of the overall impact of the program.”

The district has been doing the random tests since 2002 and this school year’s was the second lowest rate on record. It only had 0.26 percent positive results in 2006-07.

“We’ve always been proud of this program, but this year the results were outstanding,” Assistant Superintendent Matthew McKinley said at the meeting Monday.
