This looked more like a celebration than a softball game.

And why not?

Moniteau High School athletics have a lot to celebrate these days.

This athletic program has never had a spring — or any season on the academic calendar — as successful as the one it is currently enjoying. The Warriors have captured three district team championships, an individual state title and three state tournament wins so far this spring.

It all starts with the softball team.

The scene at Slippery Rock University’s field Thursday afternoon was amazing. The stands were filled and numerous other onlookers sat or stood on top of the hillside surrounding the diamond.

Moniteau took on WPIAL champion and unbeaten Ellwood City and thrashed the Wolverines, 11-0. The Warriors banged out 16 hits offensively and recorded their 10th straight shutout defensively.

Kennedy DeMatteis tossed a one-hitter, allowing only a bunt single to a team with a composite .408 batting average. DeMatteis has allowed only a handful of hits total during her team’s 10-game winning streak. The Ellwood City faithful sat there stunned while Moniteau’s throng celebrated the day almost from the first pitch.

The Warriors are 23-1 this season. They’ve stolen 100 bases in 104 attempts.

Moniteau’s juniors and seniors have won 63 of 67 games over the past three years and have not lost to a District 9 oppponent. Moniteau takes on South Park — which features four future Division I college players at the top of its lineup — in the semifinals Monday.

Across the road Thursday at SRU, Moniteau’s baseball team wrapped up a 17-4 season with a 1-0 PIAA quarterfinal loss to WPIAL champion Riverside. This season marked the Warriors’ first-ever District 9 baseball title and state tournament win.

While accumulating that success, Moniteau baseball defeated rival Karns City three times, including in the district championship game.

Derek Boben and Aaron Marterella keyed much of the team’s success on the mound.

Moniteau’s girls track and field team claimed the District 9 Class AA title this season and fared well at the state meet, highlighted by Maura Kimmel’s state championship in the discus.

Kimmel is believed to be the first Moniteau athlete to ever win an individual state crown. She placed fourth in the shot put as well and is headed to the University of Pennsylvania as her school’s valedictorian this year.

The Warriors’ Cambrie Campbell placed third in the javelin at the state meet, exploding for her best throw ever.

At the District 9 meet, Gabby Stewart — who is hitting .652 with 27 stolen bases in softball, by the way — won the James Manner Award as the highest scoring female athlete at the meet.

Talk about springing into action.

This school has been all over it.
