Wolf wants Guard leader to remainHARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf wants the man who’s led the Pennsylvania National Guard since January to hold the position on a permanent basis.The governor on Thursday announced he was nominating Brig. Gen. Tony Carrelli to be adjutant general and lead the Guard and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.Carrelli has been interim adjutant general since James Joseph took a paid leave of absence before resigning in March.His nomination requires approval by the state Senate.

Lawyers seek change of venueMILFORD — Lawyers for a survivalist charged with fatally ambushing a Pennsylvania state police trooper outside a rural barracks are due in court today to argue his trial should be moved out of the area.Defense lawyers say that Eric Frein can’t get a fair trial in Pike County due to heavy news coverage about the 2014 ambush. His attorneys also say that Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin distributed campaign flyers last year that referenced the case and surrounded Frein “with an aura of guilt.”Frein is charged with fatally shooting Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II and wounding another trooper. He led police on a tense 48-day manhunt before U.S. marshals caught him about 30 miles from the shooting scene. He has pleaded not guilty.

Valedictorian opts not to give speechBELLWOOD — A high school valedictorian refused to deliver a graduation speech after she said school officials tried to censor her remarks.Kerri Little said she wanted to talk about bullying and other issues in her speech at Bellwood-Antis High School. She didn’t tell schools officials what she planned to say, but Principal Richard Schreier said he heard Little intended to veer off script. He asked her to deliver a more traditional speech.Little decided to skip graduation instead, writing on Facebook that she “refused to go up in front of everyone, and give a speech pretending that high school was not the most awful thing I have ever been a part of.”
