Janet Irene Lutz Gettman

Janet Irene Lutz Gettman

Janet Irene Lutz Gettman, 91, of Zelienople passed away Tuesday at the Paramount Senior Living in Mars.

She was born to Emma Barkley and Braden Lutz in Evans City. She and her siblings were industrious from young ages. After their father died at an early age, they all helped out supporting the family. Janet started working at Scotty's Restaurant when she was 15.

Her love of music started at a young age. She sang in the Presbyterian Church Choir. She graduated from Evans City High School, where she was active in vocal groups and as a cheerleader.

She met the love of her life, John Gettman, her “sweetheart,” at age 17, and they married April 24, 1947.

When he was in the Merchant Marines, sailing the far seas, she worked at Mine Safety for three years on the hot line, sodering gas masks, then in Dot's Dress Shop on Main Street, in Zelienople. She later worked as a checker at Shop and Save.

She spent many years maintaining their large house on New Castle Street, where they lived with John's parents, raising their “beautiful gang,” as she called them.

She lost her beloved husband after more than 49 years of marriage. They were a united front, working hard and enjoying the fruits of their labor by travelling to Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Western United States, Canada and regularly to Lake Erie.

Janet brought joy and music to everyone's lives. She performed with the Sweet Adeline's of Greater Harmony for 30 years, and she sang in the St. Peter's Reformed Church choir for 50 years. In her declining years, she received excellent, loving care from the staff at Paramount Senior Living.

She is survived by her children, John Edward (Jack) and Timothy Wayne Gettman of Zelienople and Alan Dale Gettman (wife Eileen) of North Kingstown, R.I.

She also is survived by her sister, Dorothy Davidson of Zelienople; her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rebecca Marie Gettman Turowski of Pittsburgh,  John William (Bill) (Elien) Gettman of Belgium, Jason Allen Gettman of Butler, Jeffrey Lee Gettman and his wife, Kate, and their children, Kayley and Chase, of Butler, Mary McManus of Zelienople (Aaron Kniess), Eleanor Kay Gettman of Topsham, Maine, and Emma Jane Gettman of North Kingstown, R.I.

She also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews, Janet Gettman Silvonic, and many beloved friends.

Janet was predeceased by her husband, John Edward Gettman; her siblings, Gerald Lutz, Dale Lutz, Helen Gettman and Anne Kaschik; her daughter-in-law, Judy Rearick Gettman; and her beloved daughter, Nancy Lee Gettman and her husband, Dan Hamilton, of Laramie, Wyo.
