Butler County's great daily newspaper

Charleston a running haven

Wherever you go, there’s always a place and maybe a little time to run. I recently visited Charleston, S.C., to attend a friend’s wedding. I packed my fancy clothes and high heels for the formal event, but saved room in my bag for shorts and running shoes.

Charleston, the oldest city in South Carolina, is a beautiful southern city by the sea. Located in the low country area where four rivers empty into Charleston Harbor, it can be steamy in the summer, but this time of year is great weather for running.

There’s a lot of history and scenery in this old town. But rather than fight traffic to explore historic downtown, I chose to run a few scenic miles in local parks.

St. James Island County Park, located five miles south of downtown Charleston, is 600 acres of scenic forest, ponds and marsh along the Stono River. The park includes areas for camping and rental cottages, a pier for crabbing and access to fishing, a climbing wall and challenge course, waterpark for kids and an off-leash dog park. There’s also a nature center and rental concession for kayaks and paddle boats for use on the park’s ponds and bikes for touring the trails.

St. James Island Park has 4.2 miles of paved, level, color-coded trails which wind through the forest and past all of the park’s attractions. I chose to follow first the orange, then green trail to take in views of the marsh and ponds.

I ran through maritime forests under live oaks covered by swaying Spanish moss, then stopped to view painted turtles that gathered under a pedestrian bridge. I couldn’t resist a short jog to the end of the pier and tried to sneak up on crabs burrowing in the marsh. The short run was just what I needed to stretch my legs after a long car trip.

As I ran, I noticed old strands of Christmas lights wound on some of the park trees. These were leftovers from the two-mile Holiday Festival of Lights Fun Run held annually on a November weekend. St. James Island Park is also the site for the five Charleston Sprint Triathlons held monthly from May through September.

The next day, I ventured northwest of town to Wannamaker North Trail, in another county park. The 13 miles of blazed single track mountain bike trail wind through the more than 1,000 acres of Wannamaker Park, another multi-use recreation park. Wannamaker North Trail reminded me of trails in North Park or Alameda Park except for the total elevation change of 15 feet.

It costs $1 to use the trail — honor system. Surprisingly, I didn’t encounter another runner, walker or mountain biker in my five- mile run through the maritime forest.

Charleston has an active running community. The Charleston Running Club, founded in 1977, holds group runs almost daily from various points in town. The club also sponsors several local races and their website, charlestonrunningclub.org posts an events calendar and links to local runners’ blogs, running stores, coaches and more.

Charleston is home to the Cooper River Run 10K, a major road race held annually on the first Saturday in April for the past 39 years. On this day the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, an eight-lane cable-stayed wonder of more than two miles in length, holds 40,000 runners on a journey from Mt. Pleasant to downtown Charleston. Visit bridgerun.com for more information or to register. But don’t wait too long. The event sells out each year.
