PyroFest is this weekendWORTH TWP — The fifth annual PyroFest opens at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Cooper’s Lake.The festival is sponsored by fireworks company Pyrotecnico of New Castle.Companies from China, Spain and Canada will participate.Activities will include a performance from the band Rusted Root featuring a choreographed special effects production. Stone house invites publicBRADY TWP — To kick of the 2016 summer season, the Old Stone House will host a Community Open House from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday.Visitors can tour the Stone House, taste open-hearth cooking samples, speak with historical re-enactors, and try their hands at period crafts like butter churning and candle dipping.Other attractions will include firing and drill demonstrations by Civil War re-enactors from the 63rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and live music from various historical periods.Historian Brady Crytzer, a 2010 graduate of Slippery Rock University and author of numerous books, will speak at 3 p.m. on the “The People of Empire: Indians and Colonists on the Pennsylvania Frontier.”Donation for admission is $3.The Old Stone House at the intersection of Routes 8, 528 and 173 is owned and operated by Slippery Rock University.Visit oldstonehousepa.org, or call 724-738-2409.
Jennings hosts photo displayBRADY TWP — The Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation hosts a display of the winning photographs from its 2015 Through the Seasons contest through Saturday at Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.Those displayed were chosen from more than 350 photographs entered by both amateur and professional photographers. The display includes those awarded first and second places by popular vote and a critics’ choice in six categories, including Capture the Season, Young Photographers, Black & White, and Historical Gems.Also included are two Best in Show photos, awarded by overall popular vote and critics’ choice.One of the winning photos, by Jennifer Wimer, was taken at the education center.All photos were taken in a Pennsylvania state park or forest.For more information, visit PaParksandForests.org.
Aviary opens butterfly gardenPITTSBURGH — The National Aviary opens the walk-through Butterfly Garden featuring a variety of butterflies on Saturday in the outdoor rose garden.This new exhibit will allow guests to mingle with butterfly species native to the region, including painted ladies, monarchs, black swallowtails, red spotted purples, viceroys and giant swallowtails.
