Fattah’s corruption trial set to begin PHILADELPHIA — Opening statements are expected today in the federal corruption trial of a veteran congressman.U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah is accused of accepting bribes and misusing campaign funds and federal grants to enrich his family and friends.An indictment alleges the 59-year-old Fattah took an illegal $1 million campaign loan for his failed 2007 mayoral campaign and misused federal funds to pay it back.Fattah says the FBI unfairly targeted him.The 11-term Democrat has represented the Philadelphia region for two decades and served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He lost his recent primary bid for re-election.Four former aides also are going to trial with Fattah. Two others have pleaded guilty and his namesake son is serving a five-year prison term in a related case.

Parenthood readies for election effortPITTSBURGH — Planned Parenthood is vowing an army of volunteers to campaign for Hillary Clinton and other candidates in this year’s election and against restrictions on abortion rights.The group’s president, Cecile Richards, told hundreds of activists at a rally in Pittsburgh on Saturday that fighting “for the right to reproductive health care for everyone” was “what this election is all about.”The rally capped a conference at the convention center since Thursday at which organizers discussed political strategies for the upcoming election. Officials said nearly 1,000 volunteers received field training on such things as recruitment and voting drives.Officials called it the largest such gathering for volunteer training in Planned Parenthood’s history, and said Pittsburgh was chosen in part because the Pennsylvania chapter is the organization’s largest with about 500 members.

Police: Man threw gas on smokerBENSALEM — Authorities on Sunday charged a Philadelphia man accused of throwing a cup of gasoline on his girlfriend while she was smoking, starting a fire that killed her after a dispute between the two.Kevin Small, 46, of Philadelphia, was arraigned on homicide, arson and other charges Sunday afternoon in the death of Mellissa Bacon-Smith, 46.The fire started in a room of the Lincoln Motel in the Philadelphia suburb of Bensalem, police said. Small told authorities he bought the gasoline from a convenience store across the street from the motel, according to a criminal complaint.The blaze was reported around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Fire crews reported thick black smoke coming from two rooms. The blaze was declared under control in about a half-hour.When reporters asked Smith if he had anything to say to Bacon-Smith’s family, he responded, “I’m sorry.”It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.At least three people were rescued from second-floor rooms following the fire. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.The Southeastern Pennsylvania Red Cross was assisting with displaced motel residents and customers, police said.

Teen leaving prom party struck, killedSTRONGSTOWN — Authorities say a teenager walking home from a prom after-party was struck and killed by a driver.State police in Indiana County said the 16-year-old was struck shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in Pine Township when the Jeep Wrangler failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and veered onto a grassy area at the side of the road.The Indiana County coroner’s office identified the victim as Kai Hrabovsky of Homer City. Police said they believe he had just left an after-prom party that was taking place in the woods along the road.Police said the 20-year-old driver fled to his home, where troopers found him. He was arrested as police opened a homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence investigation, but no charges were immediately filed.
