West Chester claims crown

No. 1 Millersville beaten in finale

Drew Diehl was named the tourney MVP as West Chester came from the loser’s bracket Wednesday to win the PSAC Baseball Tournament Wednesday at Kelly Automotive Park.

The Golden Rams (36-12) defeated Millersville, 9-7, in the championship game. The Marauders (47-5) are the top-ranked NCAA Division II team in the country and were bidding for their second straight conference title.

West Chester scored five runs in the third inning and never lost the lead. Mike Dietz, who had pitched just four innings all season, worked 3.1 frames in relief for the Golden Rams and allowed only one run.

Millersville trailed 7-1 in the fifth inning before mounting a rally. Jeremy Musser had a two-run single in that frame and the Marauders wound up with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth before lining into a game-ending double play.

Diehl had a double, two singles and two RBI in the title game. He hit .500 for the tournament, collecting three doubles, a homer and five RBI in earning his MVP award.

Justin Roman added a double, single and two RBI while Shane Dressler had two singles and two RBI against Millersville. Chas McCormick had three singles and an RBI for the Marauders.

West Chester reached the title game by eliminating Seton Hill (39-16), 8-3, earlier in the day. A four-run first inning keyed that victory.

Diehl homered, doubled and singled, Nick Bateman homered, doubled and had two RBI, Dressler a homer and three RBI. Zac Heide homered and singled for Seton Hill.

West Chester won its first PSAC crown since 2012. The Golden Rams earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament in winning the title. The entire tournament field will be announced Sunday.
