High school musicals up for Mancini awards

5 county shows among nominees

Nominees have been announced for the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards, which celebrate outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater in Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties.

Twenty schools in the three counties participated. Nominees from Butler County include the following:

Knoch High School, which performed “Chicago,” received nominations for best musical (budget 2); actress for Jordan Luntz as Velma Kelly; execution of choreography; crew/technical execution; ensemble; execution of direction; all-student orchestra; costume design (budget 2); lighting design (budget 2); and scenic design (budget 2).

Freeport High School performed “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and earned nominations for best musical (budget 1); supporting actress for Jordan Beltz as Mrs. Meers; costume design (budget 1); and lighting design (budget 1).

Evangel Heights Christian Academy, which staged “The Wizard of Oz,” was nominated for best musical (budget 1); actor for Ben Thompson as the Scarecrow; lighting design (budget 1); and scenic design (budget 1).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School, which presented “Into the Woods,” earned nominations for supporting actress for Michaela Morreale as Little Red Riding Hood; costume design (budget 1); and scenic design (budget 1).

Moniteau High School’s production of “Peter Pan” garnered a nomination for best all-student orchestra.

The awards ceremony will be held May 21 at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland, Beaver County, and feature performances by the schools nominated for best musical, students nominated for individual awards, and two representatives from each school in a grand finale.
