Students campaign to save teachers' jobs
JEFFERSON TWP — After news of teacher layoffs being discussed at the South Butler County School District, the students have created their own campaign to fight district cuts. Students at the high school took to the Internet with the hashtag #KeepKamer in support of the high school's art teacher Doug Kamer, who teaches many upper-level art classes like three-dimensional modeling, Photoshop, AP art history and flash animation courses. The students have created a petition on popular petition website Change.org and have links on Reddit and Facebook that direct people to the petition: https://www.change.org/p/knoch-school-board-keepkamer-and-the-arts. As of this afternoon, the petition had more than 1,200 signatures of the 1,500 goal. According to Amber Griffith, a junior, the student body does not have a lot of specifics on what the board intends to do. “There isn't really that much known for sure,” she said. “The most that we know is that one of our teachers, Mr. Kamer, is in jeopardy at this point.” A preliminary budget, involving possible staffing changes, will be presented at the board's meeting on at 7 p.m. May 4th, at the library of Knoch Middle School, 754 Dinnerbell Road. The board is expected to take action on that preliminary budget at its meeting at 7 p.m. May 11, taking place in the library. Some students plan to present the petition to the board during that meeting as well.
