James Edward “Jim” Wetzel

James Edward “Jim” Wetzel, 69, of Butler passed away at 3:49 p.m. Monday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born June 6, 1946, in Pittsburgh to Barbara (Beatty) Wetzel and the late Henry Wetzel.

Jim graduated from Turtle Creek High School, then attended Slippery Rock University, where he received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in elementary education. He then received his Principal Certification from Westminster College.

He was an elementary school principal in the Moniteau School District. For more than 20 years, he took the sixth grade students on an overnight field trip to Gettysburg.

Jim was a member of the Ninth Pennsylvania Reserves, a Civil War reenactment group. He was an assistant football coach, basketball coach and Moniteau High School football announcer. Jim was a Civil War historian and speaker. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling and shark tooth hunting.

Jim is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Terwilliger) Wetzel, who he married on Aug. 11, 1973; two sons, Curtis J. Wetzel and his wife, Amy, of Allison Park, and Jeffrey L. Wetzel and his wife, Makenzie, of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Chase Wetzel, Paige Wetzel and Jackson Wetzel; two sisters, Marjorie Campbell and her husband, Pat, of Canonsburg, Pa., and Deborah Anglin and her husband, Al, of Follansbee, W.Va.; seven nieces; four nephews; and numerous fraternity brothers of Sigma Pi.

WETZEL — Friends of James Edward “Jim” Wetzel, who died Monday, March 21, 2016, will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Community Church, 2167 Route 268, Chicora, with the Rev. Ryan Lucas, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
