Overdose appears to be cause of death

Antidote saves second woman

A 35-year-old woman died early Tuesday morning of a suspected drug overdose in Butler, authorities said.

Just hours earlier in the city, a heroin-antidote drug saved the life of a 32-year-old woman after she apparently overdosed.

Heather Grosskopf was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. at Butler Memorial Hospital where she was taken after her boyfriend discovered her unresponsive at her home on Maple Avenue.

An autopsy was planned for later Tuesday, according to the Butler County coroner’s office, but results were not likely to be final pending the results of toxicology tests.

Butler police said Grosskopf’s boyfriend told authorities that he awoke about 2:30 a.m. and found her lying on the couch. He described her as “not breathing and turning blue,” said police Deputy Chief David Adam.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew arrived and did cardiopulmonary resuscitation before taking Grosskopf to the hospital.

Adam said police found an empty bottle of the prescription medication clonazepam, a drug used to treat seizures and panic disorder. The prescription had been filled Monday, police noted.

The other woman, who authorities did not identify, was found in distress in the back seat of a car that police stopped about 7 p.m. Monday for speeding and improperly passing other vehicles on South Monroe Street.

The driver told the officer that he was headed to Butler Memorial with the victim, who was lying on the back seat.

The officer provided the driver with an escort to the hospital, where medical staff administered the woman with the drug naloxone, commonly referred to by the brand name Narcan.

The drug, which is used to reverse the effects of overdoses from heroin and other opioids, was credited with reviving the woman, Adam said.

She later told investigators that she did not remember overdosing. Adam said police did not find any drugs or contraband on her, and she was not charged.
