School arrest made
A teenager was caught with suspected marijuana and prescription drugs at a city school last week, Butler police said.
Brandon Selfridge, 18, of Butler faces a hearing in June on misdemeanor drug charges stemming from the case.
Police said officers were called to the Center Avenue Community School about 9 a.m. Thursday after a school police officer turned up drugs in a book bag. In the bag were 5.2 grams of marijuana and 11 pills of the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam, according to court documents.
Also in the bag were a number of empty plastic baggies, police said, that are commonly used to package drugs for sale.
Police allege the drugs belonged to Selfridge, who was in the school administrative offices when they got there. He denied knowing anything about the drugs.
He said the book bag was not his and that a friend had given it to him. He apparently was unable to provide any other information about the purported friend.
“When asked, Selfridge stated that he did not know the friend that gave him the bag,” a police affidavit said.
Officers said that in addition to the drugs, they found gym shorts and a T-shirt in the bag. Selfridge admitted the clothes were his, documents said.
Police on Friday charged Selfridge, who already is on juvenile probation, with possession of a small amount of marijuana and illegal possession of prescription medication, both misdemeanors.
A preliminary hearing is set for June 27.
