Cranberry may permit alcohol inside its parks

CRANBERRY TWP — The township supervisors are considering allowing people to drink alcoholic beverages in township parks.

Under the proposed ordinance change, groups holding events in a park or facilities could apply for a permit allowing them to serve alcohol.

All glass bottles or containers still would be prohibited.

Parks and recreation director Pete Geis said that his office has already been getting calls from groups planning graduation parties or other events this spring to see about getting permits.

His office also has received calls from residents concerned about the proposal, he said.

“We’re looking to manage it. We will put parameters in place to make sure it is managed,” he said.

Most communities in the area already allow alcohol in their parks on a permit basis, so making this change will help keep residents from going elsewhere to have events, Geis said.

If a group or a resident causes a problem, then officials can deny them permits for future events, he said.

The proposed ordinance states that the granting of permits will be done by the township manager or his designee. Officials will be able to designate locations for consumption of alcohol.

Officials do not plan to grant alcohol permits for events in the municipal center on Rochester Road or at the water park in North Boundary Park, Geis said.

The township has three shelters for rent at the Community Park on Route 19 and two shelters in North Boundary Park.

The supervisors can vote on the ordinance at their April 28 meeting at the municipal center.
