SRU baseball gets split with California (Pa.)
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Senior first baseman Alex Bell launched a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Slippery Rock University's baseball team a 3-2 victory over California (Pa.) in the first game of a PSAC-West doubleheader Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park.
Cal evened the score with an 11-7 win in Game 2.
Joe Campagna hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1 to give The Rock the lead before the Vulcans tied the game.
Grove City High School graduate Matt Gordon started the game for SRU and worked five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Butler High product Mick Fennell smacked a two-run double in the top of the fifth of Game 2, tying the game at 5 for the Vulcans. An error on the play allowed another run to score.
SRU battled back to score two runs in its half of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, but the team's bullpen was charged with five runs in the top of the sixth frame.
Former Seneca Valley High School star Carson Kessler singled, doubled and scored a run for SRU (8-27, 3-13).
