Train hits unoccupied pickup stuck on tracks

FORWARD TWP — Alcohol may have been at play early Saturday morning when a train slammed into a pickup truck that somehow got stuck on railroad tracks on Rader School Road, authorities said.

No one was injured but the smaller-sized Chevy or GMC pickup had heavy damage in the crash just after 1 a.m.

State police investigated the crash but a report was not available this morning.

Authorities said the two occupants in the truck were apparently unfamiliar with the area and possibly intoxicated when they traveled down Rader School Road, which is a dead end road.

After turning around and driving back, the middle-aged or older men got the pickup stuck on the tracks, owned by the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Railroad.

“We don’t know how it got stuck,” admitted Brian Greenawalt, assistant chief Evans City Volunteer Fire Company.

He noted that there is a sign but no gate at the railroad crossing.

The two men did not call for help but instead tried to push the pickup off the tracks. An oncoming B & P train, pulling numerous cars, aborted their effort.

The conductor put down his brakes right away but was unable to stop the train, which T-boned the driver’s side of the truck,

“We were told the train was going about 30 mph,” Greenawalt said.

He guessed the collision left the truck totaled.
