Congressman talks to high school students

BUTLER TWP — Congressman Mike Kelly told inquisitive students at Butler High School on Wednesday that he’s “fine” with presidential candidate Donald Trump, and that the billionaire and real estate mogul is a “good candidate; good choice for people to take a look at.”

Kelly, R-3, stopped well short of endorsing the polarizing Trump to students, and said he wouldn’t be endorsing anyone anytime soon.

That, Kelly said, would likely have to wait until after the Republican national convention in July. He wants to see the party stop its infighting, and move toward uniting behind whomever emerges as the eventual nominee.

“I’m endorsing whoever the Republican nominee is,” Kelly said.

Kelly acknowledged that he didn’t agree with Trump on everything, and called him a “unique” candidate that is “loved by many; hated by many.” But he said that doesn’t mean he won’t respect him as a candidate.

“I’m fine with Donald Trump. I’ve heard every one of our candidates on both sides say things that didn’t make sense to me,” Kelly said. “But that’s OK. It’s America.”

Kelly’s comments on Trump were in response to a student’s question, during a session with juniors and seniors that touched on topics from the upcoming presidential election to the dispute between Apple and the FBI over the iPhone of one of the suspects in last month’s San Bernardino shootings.
