70 pot plants found by policePITTSBURGH — Police busted a large marijuana grow operation in Pittsburgh over the weekend, recovering about 70 marijuana plants from a home in Hazelwood.Thirty-three-year-old Michael David Sullivan was arrested Sunday and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, manufacturing a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.Police responded to Sullivan’s Hazelwood Avenue home following complaints of a strong odor of marijuana coming from the residence.While officers were securing a search warrant for the property, Sullivan exited out of a back door and was arrested.Public Safety spokesman Sonya Toler said a total of 72 plants were found in addition to seeds and other components of a home-grow operation.

Defendant seeks lesser chargePITTSBURGH — A man charged with killing a police officer in a wrong-way crash while intoxicated is asking a judge to reduce the charges and either move his trial or bring in a jury from another area due to pretrial publicity.Thirty-two-year-old Clair Fink III of Ligonier is charged in Westmoreland County with third-degree murder, vehicular homicide while intoxicated and other crimes in the May 5 crash on Route 30 that killed Ligonier Township Lt. Eric Eslary.

Driver pleads in double fatalMILL HALL — A UPS driver has pleaded guilty to summary traffic violations in a crash involving a horse and buggy that killed a woman and a child in central Pennsylvania last summer.The driver originally sought a trial in Clinton County but on Friday pleaded guilty and paid almost $800 in fines associated with counts including careless driving resulting in death.State police said the UPS box truck drifted into the path of the horse and buggy on July 10 and struck the left horse shaft, the rail that goes alongside the vehicle, causing it to overturn.Police said 36-year-old Rachel Beiler of Loganton and her 8-year-old son, David, were pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people were seriously injured.
