Rt. 528 to get major makeover starting this week

JACKSON TWP — Despite concerns from officials, PennDOT is staged to begin work on Route 528.

The road will be paved from Route 19 to Route 68. Bridge replacement and realignment work over Likens Run will take place starting Thursday.

The $6 million plan has drawn concern from municipal and Seneca Valley School District officials because, when complete, the 10-ton weight limit will be removed. This means larger vehicles such as tractor-trailers and semi-trucks will be able to drive on it.

“We feel it would be extremely unsafe and unwise,” said Terry Seilhamer, Jackson Township police chief. “If you've ever driven on that road, that is not wide enough for two tractor-trailers.”

Seilhamer also said the sharp curve near the road's intersection with Hartzell Road may not be able to handle larger vehicles.

“We've given them (PennDOT) videos of our cars following tractor-trailers through that curve, and they cannot stay on their side of the road when they round that curve,” he said.

The project does not include widening the road.

Brian Steffy, PennDOT assistant construction engineer, said, “We're just trying to resurface everything and stabilize what we have out there.”
