Drug revives mom

A young Butler mother was revived with a heroin antidote after suffering an apparent drug overdose while caring for her 1-year-old baby girl, authorities said.

Butler police Monday charged 22-year-old Amanda J. McCune with child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, stemming from their investigation.

McCune was unresponsive on the floor of a child’s bedroom about 3:40 p.m. March 20 when emergency crews got to her apartment on St. Paul Street, according to court documents.

Paramedics were already treating the woman with naloxone, a drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, by the time officers arrived.

A check of the apartment, police said, turned up two empty stamp bags of suspected heroin on the bathroom floor next to a trash can. In the can, officers found another stamp bag and a drug-cooking spoon.

McCune eventually regained consciousness and “admitted using heroin with several friends while (her baby) was in her care and custody,” a police affidavit said.

One of the friends told officers that she picked up the baby and went downstairs after seeing McCune pass out.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 9 before District Judge William Fullerton.

Butler County Children and Youth Services were notified, said David Adam, Butler police deputy chief. He did not know who has custody of the child.

CYS did not immediately return a telephone call this morning.

McCune could not be reached for comment.
