Student charged with punching teacher
SUMMIT TWP — An 18-year-old student was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly punched a teacher at the Summit Academy reform school, authorities said.
The suspect, Marcus Marquise Murray of Philadelphia, is being held in the Butler County Prison on a felony assault charge.
State police were called to the school on Herman Road in Summit Township shortly after 10 p.m. and spoke to the alleged victim, Rocco A. Yauger, according to court documents.
Yauger told investigators that he was preparing for a discussion with students when Murray tried to move a chair across the room. The teacher told the student that he did not want the chair moved.
“The defendant became agitated and punched Yauger two times in the face with a closed fist,” a police affidavit said.
The teacher suffered a minor injury that authorities described as “redness” to the face.
District Judge Sue Haggerty on Friday arraigned Murray on charges of aggravated assault and harassment. He was placed in the county prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.
At his arraignment, the defendant told Haggerty that he has been a student at Summit Academy for nine months.
His preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
