School gets noteworthy honor
BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School District has been recognized nationally for being one of the Best Communities for Music Education.
The National Association of Music Merchants in March Foundation selected Freeport for the recognition due to significant student participation in music classes and ensembles.
Robert W. Harris, Buffalo Elementary music teacher and Music Department chair, said the foundation looks at student participation and music offerings in each district.
“We have a majority of students involved in some aspects,” Harris said.
He said student participation in music has risen.
This is the first time that Freeport received this distinction.
It is one of 476 out of 13,515 school districts nationwide to be honored. This is the 17th year for the awards.
The foundation recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school curriculum.
