Third bald eagle egg isn't likely to produce chick

PITTSBURGH — The third egg in the bald eagle nest along the Monongahela River isn’t expected to produce a live chick, despite reports last weekend that indicated possible “pipping.”

“We would kind of assume at this point that it’s not a viable egg,” said Bill Powers, president of PixController, which runs the video stream of the nest.

The egg, the final of three laid this year by the eagles, was projected to hatch this past weekend. Powers said it’s not uncommon for at least one egg of a brood to turn out nonviable, and that the parent eagles will likely continue to incubate the egg until it crumbles inside the nest.

The eagles’ first egg hatched in the early morning of March 22, and was followed by another live chick on March 23.

Powers said thousands of people have been logging on to the company’s video stream each day to watch the pair of eaglettes.

“We have a pair of chicks that are pretty active compared to last year’s, so they’re pretty entertaining to watch,” Powers said.

The video of the eagles can be seen on the Butler Eagle website at www.butlereagle.com.
