Browns make it rain for Goff
Browns associate head coach-offense Pep Hamilton made it rain Friday in an effort to figure out if California quarterback Jared Goff has what it takes to overcome inclement weather.
After all, the Browns won’t want to draft Goff second overall April 28 unless they’re convinced he could perform well in conditions often found in the AFC North.
So near the end of Goff’s pro day workout, which received positive reviews, Browns associate head coach-offense Pep Hamilton used a green Gatorade squeeze bottle to repeatedly squirt water on a football.
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said Hamilton told him before the workout in Berkeley, Calif., “I hope it pours today. I want to see him throw a wet ball.”
The sky was blue, but Hamilton had the water-bottle experiment up his sleeve.
Browns coach Hue Jackson and Hamilton watched closely as Goff proceeded to throw a soaked ball to receivers. He handled the test well.
“What we saw at the end of his scripted workout is more like what a private workout will be,” NFL Network analyst Bucky Brooks said. “So when the Cleveland Browns work him out, you can expect them to have wet balls and to have some things in place to see if he can thrive in inclement conditions. He threw the ball really well at the end of the workout when it was a wet ball.”
The Browns will likely try to satisfy their seemingly everlasting need for a franchise quarterback by drafting Goff or North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz second overall, especially if their interest in trading with the San Francisco 49ers for Colin Kaepernick never materializes into a deal.
The 49ers’ talks with the Browns and Denver Broncos have stalled, and CSNBayArea.com recently quoted an unnamed source saying “there’s a good chance” Kaepernick will stay with San Francisco.
