Audubon Society will host free showing of documentary

The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania is celebrating 100 years by hosting free showings of the documentary “The Messenger” next week at two locations for Butler County residents.

The movies are part of the society’s centennial campaign, which vows to raise $7 million with its celebrations leading to the anniversary Thursday.

The film discusses the mass depletion of songbirds around the world and shows the organizations focused on preventing the situation from worsening.

The films will show at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Freeport High School and at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College in Butler.

According to Rachel Handel, the organization’s communication director, the funds will go to renovations and upgrades for the Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve in Fox Chapel, the Succop Nature Park in Butler and the Todd Nature Reserve in Sarver.

“Additionally, ASWP will open a new community center and park adjacent to Todd Nature Reserve, along the Butler-Freeport Community Trail,” she said.

According to Jim Bonner, executive director, the campaign already has passed the goal’s halfway point.

“We are excited to announce a lead gift by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, in addition to gifts and pledges from over 150 individuals and organizations,” Bonner said. “This has already helped us to raise $4.5 million of our $7 million goal.”

Founded in 1916, the organization focuses on connecting people with nature and birds.
