Thelma (Stevenson) Turansky

Thelma (Stevenson) Turansky, 89, of Butler, formerly of Johnstown, passed away Wednesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Butler, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Helen M. (Hilliard) Stevenson.

Thelma graduated from Butler High School and then graduated from Butler Memorial School of Nursing in 1947. She continued her education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing where she received her bachelor of science in nursing.

Thelma moved to Johnstown following graduation as a faculty member of the School of Nursing at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. She held various nursing positions in several hospitals and in public health. While working, she attended many nursing courses aimed toward her master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

Since retirement from the Conemaugh Medical Center, she became active in community service. Among these activities were Folk Fest, Special Olympics and Pro Papa Mission, when she went to Honduras with a medical-dental team. Thelma was BLS regional faculty for the American Heart Association and taught many classes in CPR, AED and first aid.

Some of her time was donated to the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic, the Johnstown Symphony, the Volunteer Department at the Conemaugh Medical Center, the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center, and the Greater Johnstown High School.

Thelma was a member of St. John's Reformed Church in Butler.

In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Turansky, who she married July 26, 1969, and who died March 22, 1992; her brother, Robert L. Stevenson; and one infant brother.

She is survived by her son, Jim Pugh and his wife, Grace Talusan, of Mahomet, Ill.; two grandchildren, Mattox and Devyn Pugh; two sisters, Wanda M. Stevenson of Renfrew and Jean Daubenspeck and her husband, Carl, of North Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

TURANSKY — Friends of Thelma (Stevenson) Turansky, who died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Reformed Church, 493 Evans City Road, Butler, with the Rev. Jarrod Crawford, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the Butler County Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Reformed Church, 493 Evans City Road, Butler, PA 16001, or to Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Butler County, P.O.
