Zelienople police warn of scam
ZELIENOPLE — A report of a phone scam has officials on alert.
Borough police say an individual claiming to be from Glade Run is requesting donations to help pay back taxes for the facility and that donations be mailed to a post office box.
“Somebody called and said someone was trying scam money from them and when they called the number back, it was a fax number,” Police Chief Jim Miller said. “We checked with Glade Run, and they had no one call them about it, so no one really knows.”
It is not known if the post office is one in the borough.
Miller said the police received only one report of the incident, which occurred last week. He said the person called was not scammed.
Glade Run is a residential treatment facility that houses nearly 100 youths ages 8 to 21.
“We sincerely hope that no well-meaning individual was taken in by this scam,” executive director Sheila Talarico said.
The facility released a statement saying it is not calling people.
“First, we will never solicit donations by phone. Second, we are a tax exempt nonprofit organization and as such do not pay taxes,” the release states.
