Chief: No charges in claims of hazingLEECHBURG — Investigators say charges won’t be filed at this time in alleged hazing-related assaults over the last decade involving a Western Pennsylvania high school basketball team.Leechburg Police Chief Michael Diebold said Wednesday that allegations boys were hazed or assaulted with a stick over at least 10 years are valid. But charges won’t be filed because the victims don’t want to prosecute and investigators couldn’t find evidence of criminal intent.Diebold says students would be dragged or lured into the locker room and held down during the hazing.The chief says the activity shows there may have been a “catastrophic failure” within the school district and the board should correct the issues.

7-term lawmaker pleads not guilty GIBSONIA — A state lawmaker accused of using his political influence to benefit an illegal video gambling ring has pleaded not guilty.Democratic state Rep. Marc Gergely appeared Wednesday at his arraignment before a district judge in the Pittsburgh suburbs. He signed a document but didn’t speak.State prosecutors say Gergely was a key cog in an illegal video gambling operation that had some 335 machines at 70 restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and other locations outside Pittsburgh.More than a dozen people have been charged including the 46-year-old Gergely, a seven-term lawmaker.
