Ranking lists Grove City as 8th best city in state
GROVE CITY — If you’re looking for a good place to put down roots and raise a family, Grove City is good place.
A report from Wallet-Hub, which is a personal finance social network based in Washington, D.C., ranks the best and worst places for families to live in Pennsylvania, and Grove City comes in at number eight.
But Butler ranks 114th — near the bottom of WalletHub’s list.
Jill Gonzalez, an analyst at WalletHub, said high scores in education, affordability, and socioeconomic environment tipped the scales in Grove City’s favor.
Gonzalez said the city has several positives: the state’s 10th-lowest violent crime rate at 0.49 per 1,000 residents, the third-lowest unemployment rate at 3.9 percent, and the ninth-lowest commute time at 19 minutes one-way.
Grove City Mayor Randy Riddle said the borough’s government is proud of the high rating, and credits its work keeping taxes low.
Beth Black, executive director of the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, said she wasn’t surprised by the ranking given the borough’s low cost of living, strong housing market and diverse economy.
“We’ve never been completely dependent on one specific industry, so we have a diversity in the work force which allows a lot of family-sustaining jobs to be out there,” Black said.
Regarding Butler, Gonzalez said the city was hurt by a high number of violent and property crimes, ranking 106th out of the 129 cities in the report, a low affordability ranking — with 25 percent of families in the city living below the poverty line — and an unemployment rate of 10.7 percent.
