Ronald McFarland
Ronald LeRoy McFarland, 85, of Grove City passed away at VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler on Thursday following a short illness.
Ron was born in Springfield Township, Mercer County, on Dec. 18, 1930, to Floyd Cooper McFarland Sr. and Gertrude Marie Stone McFarland.
He married Mary Catherine Dunmire on Feb. 1, 1950.
Ron enjoyed his work, loved his family and friends, and was passionate about serving his community.
His career included work as an insurance agent for both Colonial Life Insurance and the Harshaw Agency in Grove City until he began his own agency, The McFarland Insurance Agency, in 1966. His expertise centered around property, casualty and life insurance as well as employee benefits.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for the junior high and served on numerous boards of the church. He was a member of the Grove City Lions Club, member and past president of the Friends of Grove City Library, was presented with the Grove City Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1990, was a former member and past chairman of the Grove City School Board and past member of the Intermediate Unit Board. He served most recently as a volunteer at the Grove City Medical Center.
Ron enjoyed gardening, golf and travel, visiting many places nationally and internationally, including Cyprus, Scotland, Wales, Greece and England.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, at home; two daughters, Sherrie A. Gould and her husband, Steve, of Grove City and Debora M. Rudolph and her husband, Robert, of Erie; one son, Ronald A. McFarland of Grove City; one sister, Faith Shaw of Grove City; two brothers, Richard McFarland of Houston, Texas, and David McFarland of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren, Emilie and Adam, Lindsay, Steve, Cate, Julie, Alex, Katerina and Nicholas; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Katherine S. McFarland Pitzer.
MCFARLAND — The family of Ronald LeRoy McFarland, who died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home, Village of Leesburg, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant, from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday and then at the Harrisville United Methodist Church on Route 8 in Harrisville on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m.Funeral services will be at the Harrisville United Methodist Church on Route 8 in Harrisville at 11 a.m. Tuesday with pastors Jeff Canter and Willard Morse presiding.
