NEW KENSINGTON— About 100 members of an Army Reserve unit have left for their eventual nine-month deployment to guard prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

Members of the 307th Military Police Company in New Kensington left Monday. They’ll first be trained at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas before being sent to guard the detention camp.

The detention center, known as Camp X-Ray, held as many as 750 prisoners after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Although President Barack Obama signed an order in 2009 closing the Cuban camp, it remains open with about 100 inmates.

An Army spokesman says MPs are commonly used to guard Guantanamo Bay.
