SRU's Brown gets PSAC honor againSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University men's basketball forward Cornelius Brown has been named PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.Brown had 29 points and 14 rebounds against Clarion, then struck for a career-high 33 points and 15 rebounds against Gannon.He hit all 17 of his free throws against Clarion and had made 30 consecutive free throws before finally missing in the Gannon game.
SRU cross country earns all-academicSLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men's and women's cross country teams, and eight individual runners, were named All-Academic for the 2015 season by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.All members of the active roster must be above 3.0 for a team to gain the honor. Individuals must be above 3.25.Gaining individual honors for The Rock women were Leah Anne Wirfel, Jenny Picot, Slippery Rock High graduate Jessica Bennett, Tessa Dombi asnd Melissa Rains.Gaining individual honors for The Rock men were Jeremy Parsons and Slippery Rock High grads Ryan Thompson and Andrew Maxwell.
Tennessee coaches defend universityKNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee’s coaches held a rare joint press conference to say that an unfair picture of the athletic department is emerging amid a lawsuit that states the school mishandled sexual assault complaints against athletes.The federal suit filed Feb. 9 in Nashville by six unidentified women states Tennessee violated Title IX regulations and created a “hostile sexual environment” through a policy of indifference toward assaults by athletes. The suit also states the university interfered with the disciplinary process to favor male athletes.Coaches defended the university, but declined to address the lawsuit.Tennessee’s 16 head coaches said they decided on their own to hold a news conference. Athletic director Dave Hart wasn’t at the event.
NFL considering more player ejectionsINDIANAPOLIS — The NFL competition committee is considering a rules change that could lead to more ejections for personal fouls.After meeting most of the day in Indianapolis, where the league’s annual scouting combine is being held, committee member Stephen Jones said he expects a resolution at next month’s owners meetings in Florida.
